Remembering which DNS software I used

August 09, 2023 — Nico Cartron

Follow-up of my article on the web hosting I used, let's focus on DNS this time!

My domain

I bought the ncartron.org domain in November 2002 (so more than 20 years ago, time flies!), and as I'm a DNS guy, I made a few changes in those 20 years!

(You can check my article on the web hosting I used here).

History

I didn't write down all the changes I did, so most of the below will be off the top of my head :)

Clearly I thought I would have a hard time finding the changes I did, but fortunately there's a website which tracks all the NS records changes: WhoISrequest.

  • 2003:
    • Gandi (initial domain creation),
    • then moved to Agarik (my employer back then)
    • then to ns1/ns2.ncartron.org - powered by Bind back then
  • 2007:
    • Changed back to Gandi
  • 2015:
    • Changed to ns1/ns2.ncartron.org as Primary - again, still using Bind
    • and ns1.esgob.com, which was an Anycast DNS service provided for free by Nat Morris (see Nat's excellent RIPE presentation)
  • 2017:
    • Removed Esgob (Nat discontinued the service)
    • Added Gandi as secondary
    • Added ns3.cartron.ovh to start playing with Knot DNS
    • Changed ns1.ncartron.org to PowerDNS
  • 2017-2020:
    • Mostly adding/removing secondary DNS providers
  • Since 2020:
    • Stuck to ns1.ncartron.org (Hivane, running PowerDNS) and ns2.ncartron.org (OVH, running Knot DNS)

Wrap Up

Quite a few DNS changes in 20 years - now a bit more "stable" but this will likely change this year, as I want to play a bit more with dnsdist :)
