I am resisting the new Pebble Time 2 smartwatch

March 24, 2025 — Nico Cartron

Context

Eric Migicovsky, founder of the Pebble watch, recently announced that 2 new Pebble watches will be released by the end of 2025.

They will run PebbleOS, which has been open sourced by Google (Pebble got acquired by Fitbit, which itself got acquired by Google).

This got me super excited, since I owned a Pebble Time ~10 years ago, and I had backed the crowdfunding campaign for the Pebble Time 2 (but the company crashed before we had a chance to get them).

Why not buying it

I had a look at the Pebble store and was about to pre-order one, however I paused for a few seconds and decided that I would resist.

The reason is very simple: I own a bunch of smartwatches, and I am not tinkering with them as much as I wished, since they mostly stay in a drawer these days:

  • PineTime : I stopped using it 18 months ago, but I still like it and it works really well with Sailfish OS / Amazfish
  • Bangle.js2: I haven't spent enough time on it, but it is a promising watch and I still need to wear it while running to see how it compares with my Suunto spor twatch
  • Sensor Watch / Casio F-91W: I am waiting for the Sensor Watch Pro to be shipped and I'll probably use it again

With the above, I realised that I still have plenty of fun waiting for me, so why buy yet another smartwatch?
Granted, the new Pebble looks promising, with its always-on display and impressive battery life, open source OS, steps counting, sleep tracking and heart rate sensor - but I can't help thinking it will end up in a drawer, so I'd rather spend the time and energy (not even mentioning the money) on the 3 other watches I own already!
