Giving to charity & useful reminders
Charity / giving
I give to different charities, apps and websites I use on a regular basis.
I keep track of my donations in a
Joplin note, which
allows me to make sure I have donated in the year.
Reminders
However, some of those charities do send useful reminders.
What I mean with useful is: a nicely written, not aggressive email, reminding me
that I gave last year.
One charity which I think makes a good job at that is Wikimedia - I use Wikipedia frequently, so it is normal for me to give every year. I'm not giving a huge amount (20€), since I have a fairly long list of charities/websites I give to, but I still do it.
Here's an email I received from "Jimmy" (in French) reminding me to give to Wikipedia:
The email is short and straight to the point, with a link to renew my donation (and another one to give more).
Once you renew it, you have a "thank you" message, which is also short:
Wrap Up
I would usually argue that marketing messages from non-profit bother me, but that's mostly because:
- either they send too many emails once you have donated, and you haven't necessarily subscribed to them,
- or those emails aren't interesting.
Wikimedia nails it - I don't recall receiving any other email from them, apart from this yearly reminder.
And a quick search in Thunderbird confirms it: 25 emails across 9 years, that's not bad:
Please do consider donating to Wikimedia if you use Wikipedia, that really makes a difference!
