Book: Accidental Empires (Robert X. Cringely, 1996)

August 07, 2025 — Nico Cartron

Context

This is a rather old book (1996), and I heard of it when reading Inventing the Future (see my review here).

I bought it on World of Books - which I recommend for used books, as well as books in English (not super easy to find in France).

My Thoughts

I finished Accidental Empires a long time ago, and this (mostly) empty article was sitting in my drafts folder for months.

I must admit I had a hard time finishing the book, as it felt a bit all over the place and I usually like structured books (and things more generally).

Thoughts on books in general

I forced myself to finish the book, but once done I took the decision not to do it anymore - if I really can't get into a book, what's the point?
So moving forward, if after a few hours / days spent on a book, I still can't appreciate it, I will just give up and will either give the book, or sell them.

Speaking of which, I'll look for a site that offers that - if you're using such a service, I'm interested to know which one, so please reach out!
