Book: Inventing the Future, Bit by Bit (John Buck, 2023)

October 11, 2024 — Nico Cartron

Context

I forgot how I heard of that book, but I think it was on HackerNews or Twitter.

The interest thing is that the author used books.by, which is a service that sells books directly to readers.

This book is about Apple's Advanced Technology Group (ATG), a group inside Apple that worked on many breakthrough technologies.

My thoughts

I'll be honest: I had a hard time "getting into" the book: it's a never-ending switch between different stories and people, with plenty of different angles.

I usually try to keep track of all the protagonists of a book, but in that case it was pointless, so I gave up and instead focused more on the stories, and eventually that worked.

There are really many different stories interlacing with each other, but Buck manages to tell how major Apple technologies, such as QuickTime, QuickScan or QuickDraw came to life.

What fascinated me is how third-party companies worked with Apple to deliver things for the Macintosh, or complementing the Macintosh - something that doesn't happen anymore these days ("Sherlock" anyone?)

TL;DR: If you're a die-han fard of "the old Apple", this book is very interesting and gives a lot of details and stories. If not, maybe you can skip it.
