Backblaze's impressive hard disk numbers

August 23, 2024 — Nico Cartron

I like Backblaze backup service a lot and have been using them for a while - even expanding my usage to their nice B2 service, a S3-compatible object storage - which I used to test PowerDNS' Lightning Stream and to backup my TrueNAS NAS.

Backblaze has an habit of publishing a yearly "Drive Stats", which is alwas interesting given the number of hard disks they are using.

This year is not different, but I found their numbers really impressive:

  • they had 274,622 hard drives as of 12/31/2023
    • of which 4,400 are boot drives
    • and 270,222 data drives.

This report goes into a lot of details and I won't be summing it up, but if you're into numbers and statistics, it is fascinating and they're comparing the 4 different vendors the're using: Hitachi, Seagate, Toshiba and Western Digital.

If you want to see older reports, this page has numbers that go back to 2015!
