Wifi and rain - troubleshooting basics

January 23, 2025 — Nico Cartron

A very short one (as usual?), which I like to sum up as "always come back to the basics".

I stumbled upon Predrag's article about Wifi and rain some weeks ago on HackerNews - go and read it yourself, as it's super interesting, but I'll be summarising it below:

  • Predrag's father home internet connection worked fine for years,
  • then all of a sudden, it stopped working... unless it was raining!
  • Predrag spent a lot of time troubleshooting it, only to find out that the issue was caused by... a tree!

I will probably write some articles about it in the future, but it strikes me that in IT (network/sysadmin), when you have a problem, very often starting with the basics is a good idea, rather than trying to boil the ocean!

Predrag's post is yet another example/confirmation for me.
