The "Why am I doing this?" Running session explained

July 19, 2023 — Nico Cartron

Context

Yesterday, it was 30 degrees Celsius outside at lunch time, and because I was tired (went to bed late because of work), I didn't wake up early as I initially planned to (7am, which would have been something around 15 degrees Celsius).

So I went running after lunch. And of course tough it was!

It was tough for 2 reasons:

  • I had lunch not long before,
  • It was 30+ degrees Celsius, which means that when running the "feels like" was a few more degrees. Even with a cap, sun glasses and water, you still feel the heat.

But why?

When running yesterday, I got into the mood of "why am I doing this?", which means I'm not enjoying the run as much as usual - mostly because of the heat evidently.

"But why inflicting this to yourself then?" I thought.

And while it's true that it's not much fun to run in the heat, there's something stronger (at least for me) which allows me pushing: thinking about after the run is finished, when back home, enjoying a cold drink and a shower.

Simply put, being happy/proud to have gone "the extra mile" (pun intended) and feel this tiredness, which interestingly gives you more energy!

Sure, that run yesterday was hard, and when I went back home, I felt relieved, but I knew the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

And that, my friends, is in a nutshell why we (runners) keep doing this :)
