The Super Mario Bros. Movie - quick review
I recently watched that movie with my youngest son, and got pleasantly surprised
The Movie
The goal of this article is not to write a full review of the movie, as you'll find plenty of those elsewhere - but rather to give my feedback.
But let's to a TL;DR: Mario and Luigi live in New-York (Brooklyn) and just launched their own plumbing company, and are looking at their first customers.
When trying to fix a huge leak, they stumble upon some giant pipes, that send them to other worlds, where Luigi encounters Bowser, and Mario meets Toad and Daisy in the Mushroom Kingdom.`
Feeling
My expectations
I went to the theater with my youngest son during the school holidays, and my expectation level was pretty low: I had seen the trailer and I wasn't really expecting a great movie.
Pleasantly surprised
As said in the introduction, I got pleasantly surprised: the movie is fun, there's a ton of references to the Nintendo world (e.g. Mario playing Donkey Kong on an arcade gaming system, or the restaurant where Mario and Luigi meet being named "Punch-Out Pizzeria", of course in reference to the Boxing game released on the Nintendo NES in 1987).
Also, given that Mario and Luigi are super heros, it was nice to see them struggling with their power / fame, while discovering their "new friends".
My son also liked it - even though he doesn't have all the "history" related to Nintendo and Super Mario, he knows Mario Kart and Super Mario 3D World, so does appreciate a movie starring Mario and Luigi.
