Spotify on SailfishOS

Some quick tips on how to use Spotify / Hutspot on SailfishOS

What's Hutspot

I'm a huge music fan, and using Spotify a lot. Using SailfishOS as my main phone, of course I needed a native Spotify app (although the Android one works fine on my Xperia XA2).

I'm using Hutspot, which works really well, although not having been updated for a while (02/2019 as I'm writting this post).

As explained on the Openrepos page, Hutspot is just a controller, it takes advantage of Spotify's Connect feature, and requires a Premium Spotify account. Hutspot requires a Spotify Player, such as Librespot.

Basic Usage

Once you have installed those 2 apps, you're ready to go, and will be welcomed by this:

/!\ Thanks to e-ddie on the SFOS Telegram group, just adding a small advise:
you want to scroll to the bottom of the page, and select "Authorize using Browser":

which will use SFOS browser to open the Spotify web site to authenticate with your credentials, rather than trying to do so from the app, which is broken.
May save you time :-)

Clicking on the "burger" icon (bottom right) will lead you to the "Menu" page:

When going into the Settings part, check that Start Libresport is active, if not click on it.
You can now click on the Play icon to start listening to Music.

Tips

I always assumed that my playlists were not available in Hutspot, because not implemented by the developer.
Not a big deal, although it would have been nice to have it.

But here comes the interesting part: I discovered today after someone asked a question on the SailfishOS Telegram group, how to:

  • display your Spotify playlists,
  • enable shuffle play from Hutspot.

Yep, I know, but better late than never ;)

Spotify Playlist

When you're in the main Hutspot window, you will see something like this:

(I know, my music tastes are quite diversified :-))

You can actually switch between Spotify "sections", by clicking at the top of screen ("My Followed Artists") in the screenshot above.

This will basically circle between:

  • My Followed Artists,
  • My Saved Albums,
  • My Recently Played,
  • My Saved Tracks,
  • ... and My Playlists!!!

Main play view

Since I could display my Playlists, there had to be a way to play them in random order, right?
So I did some "research" and indeed found it:
Swiping to the left will bring you to such a view! Bingo!

Which allows you to:

  • select shuffle and repeat modes,
  • get more details on the current song,
  • and see the upcoming songs in the current playlist.

Hope that's helpful! :-)
