SFOS 4.5.0.16 "Struven ketju"

February 11, 2023 — Nico Cartron

Struven ketju

As for the latest SFOS release "Vanha Rauma, this one has no entry in the English Wikipedia, but it does in the Finish one.

So what is it?

A quick translation gives me: "The Struve Geodetic Arc is a triangulation chain built in the early 19th century between the Arctic Ocean and the Black Sea. Its purpose was to determine the length of a single meridian over the longest possible distance and as far north as possible. This information made it possible to calculate the exact shape and size of the Earth more reliably. The project was named after F. G. W. Struve, who conceived and executed it. The chain was mainly located in what was then Russia; only the northernmost part was in Sweden-Norway. Today, the chain runs through ten different countries. The project is also known as the Russian-Scandinavian Graduation. Its results were later of great importance as the basis for independent Finland's own geodetic grid and map production." (Thanks go to Deepl)

You can visit the National Land Survey of Finland website to learn more.

As usual, Jolla likes giving Finish names to its release, and I learn something new every time! :-)

Upgrading

The release is now available for everyone - it was in Early Access for a week.

I got the following message when upgrading:

Since my Xperia 10 III has been flashed with Sailfish OS very recently, I did not remove those packages and just carried on, and got no issue.

OK, tell me what's new!!

Right, if you've read my previous article about "guessing new SFOS features through translation", you've probably seen that I was not expecting huge new features.

And indeed, this being a minor version, there's no "flagship" feature, but nevertheless there's a long list of very nice improvements and tweaks.

As usual, I'll be focusing on the features/improvements which I think are the most interesting. For those who want to read more, you can have a look at the release notes and the changelog.

Android App Support

  • Android App Support has been upgraded to Android 11, API level 30 (compared to Android 10 / API level 29 before)
  • App Support now runs in an unprivileged container without root access to the system
  • Android icons now look like SailfishOS ones
  • Hint To get access to the Android settings, type 5 times on the Android version at the top of the page in System > Info > Android App Support
  • Improvements on speed / performance, low memory situations, mobile data
  • Album covers are now displayed on the lock screen! HEAH!!! <3
    • Also, Lock screen controls have been improved and work better

Note: after you have upgraded, you will find that all the Android apps that you had put in folders will be outside of those folders, back in the apps drawer :)

Calendar

  • Now includes tabs for the day/week/month views, making it easier to switch
  • Show daylight saving time (DST) change indication in the month view - very simple but super useful, see by yourself:
  • CalDAV sync to Nextcloud fixed

Misc

  • Clicking on a contact's address asks which service to use to show a map:
  • New "Volume bar"makes it possible to control the volume level of all other tones but ringtones
  • "Do Not Disturb" can now allow calls from everyone/contacts/favourites
  • Battery ageing protection allows stop charging at 80 or 90% to protect the battery
  • Wifi connection details can be shown with “Settings > WLAN > Long press of WiFi network”
  • Backup to Nextcloud works again
  • Security Code can now be alphanumeric
  • It is now possible to edit a screenshot picture directly once you took it:
    • in the notification, a new "Edit" option appears
    • you can e.g. crop the screenshot, like I did below:

Wrap Up

As I concluded in my previous article, Sailfish OS 4.5 does not bring a lot of new features, but rather improvements such as a better Android App Support.
There are still a lot of nice new additions, like the new volume bar or improvements to DND.

Overall once again a nice work from Jolla, which allows us waiting for the next major release :)
