Second Sailfish OS France meetup

April 15, 2022 — Nico Cartron

A quick summary of this second SFOS meetup, and some information about the next one!

Idea of those meetup

This was our 2nd meetup, after the first one we did in December 2021 (you can find a summary here).

The idea is to gather between Sailfish OS fans, first to meet face to face (always nicer than via the SFOS forum or the Telegram channel), and second to give each other tips, or even perform some installations (flashing devices, installating or demonstrating apps, ...).

Attendees

Initially we were supposed to be around 10 folks, but a few couldn't make it, so in the end we were 6 - of which 4 were already there at the 1st meetup:

  • Bruno,
  • Driss,
  • Guillaume,
  • Patrice,
  • Patrick (who travelled from Switzerland!),
  • and myself.

From left to right: Patrick, Patrice, Guillaume, Bruno, Driss, Nico

We met at "La Felicita" in Paris, next to "Station F" (Paris 13th arrondissement) - Italian food, and most importantly large tables and not too much noise - we wanted to avoid the same issue as the 1st meetup ;)

What did we do?

Device flashing

Guillaume had brought a friend's Xperia X who tried flashing it but couldn't.
Patrick brought his PC as well as the files needed to flash SFOS (SFOS image, Sony AOSP binaries, ...).
Unfortunately, after several tries, we didn't succeed, even though we tried with different micro-USB cables.
We'll do better next time (see the end of the article).

Installing Openrepos and Chum

Bruno and Driss were curious about alternative stores, but weren't sure whether that was safe, nor how to install them.

We explained:

  • alternative stores' principle and potential risks (TL;DR: question of trust in the community and the developer whose app you're installing),
  • as well as the difference between Openrepos and Chum:
    • Chum only requires one repository to be added, and compiles applications directly from the source code,
    • with Openrepos, the RPM packages must be generated by the developer.

Then we installed Chum/Openrepos on Bruno and Driss' X10ii - they're now enjoying a smartphone with a lot more possibilities :-)

One more thing...

Of course, we had all thoses discussions/workshops while enjoying beer and a fine diner, in a very nice place.

Next meetup

Pierre suggested on the SFOS FR Telegram channel that we find a proper place that we can use for 1/2 day, allowing us to organise a "real" meetup: workshops, demos, ...
This would also be a good way to invite people from outside the Sailfish OS community, for instance by getting in touch with local GNU/Linux associations.

This is clearly tempting, and it looks like we could do it in Marseille (where Pierre has some contacts), probably around September.

If you're interested, come and say Hi on the French SFOS Telegram channel !
