Road crossing in Germany

November 03, 2023 — Nico Cartron

Once again, I'm writing this article "because" of another one from Ruben.

In that article, Ruben explains the situation he faced in Sydney where one pedestrian crossing's light was stuck to red, and after 10+ minutes waiting, he and Clara (along with plenty of other pedestrians) had to walk to the next crossing to be able to... cross the road.

This reminded me of the first time I travelled to Germany, circa 2008: I was at a partner's office for work, and we went out for lunch. We were talking and approaching a road that we had to cross, and then being a good French and completely in my discussion, I was about to cross at the red light (hey, there was no car at all!), when the German gentlemen I was with litterally stopped like Road Runner in the cartoon.

Indeed, I had forgotten that a lot of countries do respect red lights and patiently wait for the light to turn green, before crossing.

That was fun and I still remember it 15 years after!
