Review of the Gotek floppy simulator for the Amstrad CPC
Gotek
I spent a bit of time looking at CPC stuff on eBay, and realised there were
options to avoid using floppies, by replacing the internal floppy drive with
e.g. a Gotek, which is a floppy simulator with a USB reader - you basically put
our .dsk
files on a USB stick, then plug the stick into the Gotek, and off you
go.
Here is the Gotek before I mounted it in the CPC:

and here it is once inside the CPC:

and now with a game selected:

Using it
There are different variations of the Gotek flopppy emulator:
one with a basic screen showing the the partition number, and 2 buttons to increase/decrease this number:
one with a proper OLED screen, along with a rotary button to browse the USB disk (the one I have):
Wrap Up
Using the Gotek reader is a joy, no need to swap floppies anymore, and you can have many floppies/games on the same USB stick, making it a lot less crowded around the CPC!
