Remembering which email software I used

November 08, 2023 — Nico Cartron

After web hosting and DNS, let's have a look at the email software I used!

My domain

I bought the ncartron.org domain in November 2002 (so more than 20 years ago, time flies!), and as for web hosting and DNS, I used various providers / software for email.

History

I didn't write down all the changes I did, so most of the below will be off the top of my head :)

Some lookup/history sites do keep track of DNS changes (see here for my MX records):

  • 2003-2008:
    • ISP: FreeBSD server at home
    • Mail server: Postfix + UW IMAP + Squirrelmail Webmail
  • 2009:
    • ISP: Simply Mail Solutions
    • Mail Server: Zimbra
  • 2010-2013:
    • ISP: Google (Google Apps)
    • Note: convenient at the time, but I moved away because of privacy concerns
  • 2014-2016:
    • ISP: Scaleway/Dedibox
    • Mail server: Postfix + Cyrus IMAP
  • Since 2017:
    • ISP: OVH
    • OS: Debian GNU/Linux
    • Mail server: Postfix + Dovecot
  • Q4 2023: migration in progress:
    • ISP: OpenBSD.Amsterdam
    • OS: OpenBSD
    • Mail server: Postfix + Dovecot

Wrap Up

As for web hosting and DNS, I switched email providers a few times in 20 years, but am now sticking to self-hosting with Postfix/Dovecot.
