On being kind and honest
A (super) short article on why I think being kind always pays off
Context
I'm a kind guy (or at least I like to see myself as kind).
I try to be humble and kind every day, and when that's not the case, I remind
myself to do better next time.
I was at the F5 Paris office this week, and we went to a Japanese restaurant to have lunch with colleagues.
When paying, we split the bill, but for some reason my card wouldn't work - or
more precisely, the credit card terminal was stuck on "waiting confirmation".
After 5 minutes waiting, the owner told me it was fine, that I would pay next
time I come. I found it nice that she offered that, especially since that was
the first time I was coming in that place.
I thanked her and said goodbye.
Getting back to pay
Since I was staying overnight, I came back in the evening, the owner recognized
me and she even remembered the amount.
This time, I used a different card (which was at the office so I couldn't use it
at lunch), and it worked straight away.
The owner thanked me extensively for coming back to pay, and when handing me my receipt, she also gave me a bottle of Asahi beer to thank me.
I thanked her back, and went back to my hotel.
Wrap Up
I felt good tonight - not only did I pay what I owed, but somehow got rewarded for doing it.
Small victory - not even a victory, but a recognition that being kind and honest still makes sense these days.
