Notmuch still way better at searching than iOS' stock email app

Context

Yesterday I was searching for an email in my Archive folder, and doing it from my iPhone it wouldn't work:

I switched to my beloved FreeBSD laptop running Mutt along with notmuch, and boom in a few seconds I could find it:

Being honest

Of course, notmuch and iOS do not work the same way:

  • the iOS email client stores some of the emails locally, but not everything, so whenever it needs to find an email in a folder it didn't cache, it needs to query the server, which obviously takes some time
  • whereas notmuch is meant to cache all the emails it sees, therefore allowing it to be much faster to find emails.

Still, that just confirms it's good to have tools per use case. I'm not saying one is better than the other everytime, but in that case, notmuch is killing it for that search I did.
