My feedback on OpenBSD.Amsterdam as hosting company

June 13, 2024 — Nico Cartron

Context

As I explained here and here, I recently moved my dedicated email server from a Debian GNU/Linux, hosted by OVH in France, to OpenBSD hosted by OpenBSD.Amsterdam, in... Amsterdam, the Netherlands (surprise!)

Feedback

It's now been a few months since I completed the migration, and I am 100% happy with OpenBSD.Amsterdam:

  • the service runs flawlessly,
  • the email communication is stellar for a non-profit organisation: for instance, when performing a maintenance on their infrastructure, not only did they send the communication largely upfront, but also the maintenance was performed on a weekend, so the disruption was really minimal
  • their tech support is also super reactive, I had a few questions initially and got an answer in a matter of hours, even minutes sometimes!
  • heck, they even donate to the OpenBSD Foundation for every VM you buy or renew (€ 39.410 as of May 2024)!

Example of an email communication I recently received:

So I HIGHLY recommend considering them if you're looking for an OpenBSD VM hosting.

FreeBSD tag for OpenBSD?

I know, this article's tag says "FreeBSD" while the server runs OpenBSD. But I don't want to create another tag just for that (heck, what would have been the point of doing that?), so I'll stick to FreeBSD.
