Last run with running shoes: Salomon Ultra Glide

February 13, 2024 — Nico Cartron

History

I bought those shoes in December 2021, and ran a total of 760 kilometers with them.

I did a review in that article 2 years ago.

Feedback

Why do I retire them?

At almost 800 kms, it's obvious that the cushioning is not really great anymore.

Also, when running, the left shoe is doing a funny sound - something like a chick singing ;)
That's not necessarily unpleasant, but after a while it can be a bit annoying, and I guess it also means the shoes are not in great shape anymore - which is confirmed by the fact that my feet are soring a bit after intense sessions.

What I liked

  • the Quicklace system - makes lacing a lot easier
  • the grip: although not as good as e.g. the S/Lab Genesis I now use, or the Altra Olympus and Mont Blanc.
  • the look: sky blue, white and red <3

What I didn't like

  • the toebox: it is a lot narrower than what I'm used to, and sometimes it can be a bit unpleasant, especially for my right foot which still has remnants of the roots it hit during the 2022 SaintéLyon :-)

Wrap Up

I really like those Ultra Glide. They are the first Salomon trail running shoes I used, and since then I bought the S/Lab Genesis (which I'll review soon).

As said above, the only downside for me is the toebox, but looking at Salomon's website, they have 3 different options for the shoe width:

  • Slim (just a few models),
  • Normal (most of the shoes),
  • Wide (a bit more options than the Slim ones).

Looking at the Ultra Glide 2 page (since the Ultra Glide does not exist anymore) confirms that it is indeed a "Normal" width:

and so is the S/Lab Genesis, as I have the same feeling with my right feet.

I'll probably have to look at the wide ones next time - or stick to Altra or Topo shoes, whose toeboxes are wide by design.

Putting them to a different usage

I play football a lot with my kids in our backyard, and for that I usually keep a pair of running shoes I no longer use - while they're worn out for running, they're OK for casually playing football.

So those Ultra Glide are now my go-to shoes when going outside with the kids, and they're still doing a great job!
