Infinite Mac: experiment Macintosh/NeXT systems in your browser!

September 24, 2025 — Nico Cartron

I stumbled upon this on Mastodon, and even though I won't play with it every day, I still find it both fun and extremely impressive.

As per its website:

Infinite Mac is a collection of classic Macintosh and NeXT system releases
and software, all easily accessible from the comfort of a web browser.

And indeed, you can play with all sorts of Mac/NeXT machines:

  • from the very early System 1.0 from 1984,
  • to MacOS X 10.4 (Tiger) from 2005,
  • with NeXTStep 1.0 (1989), OPENSTEP 4.0 (1996) or Mac OS 7.6, 8.0 and 9.0 in between!

NeXTStep 1.0 (1989)

OPENSTEP 4.0 (1996)

Mac OS X 10.1 (2001)

I haven't read yet Mihai's blog posts explaining how it works, but I will for sure!

If you want to get back a few decades ago, you can now do so with Infinite Mac!

Thanks, Mihai!
