Commodore is releasing a flip phone running Sailfish OS!
I was not expecting this at all, and did not see the news before someone on the French SFOS Users Telegram channel mentioned it: Commodore is releasing a flip phone that will run Sailfish OS!.
You can read more at the above link, but this got me excited - while I'm waiting for my Jolla Phone to arrive!
What sets it apart (in addition to running Sailfish OS) is that it does not ship with a browser nor social media, to "avoid endless scrolling".
"Disconnect from the cloud, reconnect with the crowd".
The phone comes in different colors, but I really like the beige one, clearly a reminder of Commodore computers:
The article mentions SFOS only once:
Under the hood, it runs Sailfish OS, which is designed not to monetize or
share your data. Evolved from Nokia, our custom version was built by Jolla’s
ex-Nokia engineers, and runs the best Android apps (without running Android).
But the Callback (yes, that's the name of the phone) dedicated page mentions it a lot more:
- No data selling – Commodore x Sailfish OS puts privacy first
- Callback’s custom software was developed with Jolla, the legendary ex-Nokia engineering team behind Europe’s independent, Sailfish OS.
- "Does it have AI?" - Commodore Callback and Sailfish OS have zero AI by default.
Pre-orders open June 30.
