A quick look at InfiniTime 1.12 "Olallieberry"

April 15, 2023 — Nico Cartron

Mostly under the hood stuff, but not only

InfiniTime now mature

The last InfiniTime release was in October 2022, so 6 months ago.
If you compare this to the initial release frequency (which was more one a month), this shows to me that the "basic" features are there, and the team is now focusing on tweaking and improving InfiniTime, rather than just adding new features.

(By the way, you can check out the InfiniTime firmmares history on that page, if you're interested to see the changes.

Of course, that does not mean we have everything needed - there are still missing features, but in my opinion, those are mostly "nice to have".

With that, let's dive into what Olallieberry brings!

Improvements

Battery level

It's been known for a while that the battery level reported by InfiniTime were not really accurate: you could stay at >50% for a while, but all of a sudden, dropping from 50 to 10% would happen in a matter of hours.
Or even worse, the watch could still show 30%, but would shut down as in fact the battery was running out of power.

Battery levels are not easy to estimate, especially the discharge curve.

This has been fixed in this version, and hopefully the estimation should be a lot more accurate.

On top of that, InfiniTime will now show a yellow battery icon, to show the user that he should charge the watch.

User Interface

  • The date and hour settings are now on the same screen, making it easier to configure
  • The settings list color has been tweaked to make it more consistent with the rest of InfiniTime

Project Maintenance

Guides

  • The Maintainer Guide is a new guide that clearly explains how PRs (GitHub's Pull Requests) should be handled
  • The Contributing Guide has been improved, giving more details about how to contribute to the project

New Companion app!

Well, not that new, but Watchmate, a companion app for Linux, is now officially listed in the InfiniTime doc.

Wrap Up

As stated in the introduction, not many new features, which is a sign of maturity, but rather improvements and tweaks to prepare for the future of InfiniTime.

Now go and upgrade your PineTime!
